The Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) is a programming interface for telephony applications. The interface was introduced by Microsoft and Intel in 1993. For example, the Windows (ab operating system version 5.0) contains version 3.0 of this interface. From Microsoft Windows 95 onwards, TAPI was firmly anchored in the operating system. Applications for TAPI include software telephones, video conferencing programs and call centre - systems. TAPI- drivers are also commonly used in conjunction with ISDN- telephone systems for configuration and call handling using CTI. In 1999, TAPI 3.0 was released to enable IP- telephony with Windows 2000. As far as these types of applications are concerned, TAPI is in direct competition with CAPI. Applications written for TAPI can only be used with a corresponding driver, just like applications for CAPI. Since CAPI is hardly known in the USA, future applications from international manufacturers are more likely to be designed for use with a TAPI1TP21 driver than for CAPI.
